WHAT TO DO IN MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST

The cloud forests of Costa Rica are the main reason why so many people visit the country. The abundant ecosystems that occur in tropical and subtropical mountainous areas, as well as the atmospheric conditions in Monteverde, Costa Rica, allow for this unique region to be consistently covered by clouds, covering everything in a fine mist. It’s this humidity that maintains an incredible biodiversity within the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here are some of the best things to do in Monteverde.

Go Hiking

While there are many incredible things to do in Monteverde, simply going for a hike through the cloud forest is spectacular in itself. There are a number of well-maintained and easy-to-hike trails through the reserve, ranging range from (1km to 5km, and there are both self-guided and guided hiking tours available. Walking through the cloud forest is a magical and unforgettable experience to feel at one with nature.

Go birdwatching

Monteverde is the natural habitat of 400  bird species and the best place to go on a birdwatching tour is the Curi-Cancha Reserve. On a guided tour, you will have the opportunity to see some of the most impressive birds in all of Costa Rica, including the keel-billed toucan, resplendent quetzal and the blue-crowned motmot, as well as a variety of hummingbirds and other birdlife.

Marvel at orchids

There are over 1,400 species of orchids growing in Costa Rica, and 500 of them can be found in Monteverde. The Monteverde orchid house has 426 species of orchids growing here which is a magnificent sight. A tour through the gardens will help you learn all about the different species, where they are from, how they are cultivated and even  how to grow one at home. Being surrounded by so many beautiful orchids is an incredible and unique experience.

Hang out in a butterfly garden

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens are a popular attraction located between the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve and the Monteverde Cloud Forest. There are four different butterfly gardens, a medicinal plant garden, a biodiversity centre and a leaf-cutter ant garden. There are over  50 butterly species of butterflies on show here. The gardens in Monteverde offer a volunteer programme for those looking to get up close to impressive creatures.

 Witness a Frog Pond

Frog and toad populations are declining over the world. The Monteverde frog pond is an educational tour where you can witness 25 different species of amphibians, endemic to Costa Rica. Learn about their native habitats, behaviours, diet, reproduction cycles and the external factors that threaten their population. A percentage of the proceeds from your tour will go towards the all-important frog and toad research and conservation. Take the tour in the evening when the frogs are more active and vocal.

Walk through the treetops

Walking the Selvatura treetop suspension bridges is an incredible way to experience the cloud forest. There are eight suspension bridges that are connected by walkways offering a bird’s-eye view of the cloud forest, which is a great way to see monkeys, sloths, birds and incredible vegetation from a different perspective. This two-and-a-half-hour leisurely nature walk will help you experience every shade of green and breathe in the freshest and cleanest of air.

Soak in massive waterfall

The San Luis Waterfall just outside of the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, has a number of ways to visit. You can hike for three hours, ride a horse there or take a taxi to the San Luis research station and hike the final 45 minutes to the 100 metre waterfall. Whichever way you arrive the inviting cascade and its cold waterfall pool, will make it worth the while. Make the most of the trip by taking a picnic or just admire the immense beauty of the falls and surrounding the Monteverde cloud forest.

Do a night hike

Around 80 percent of the animals in Monteverde are nocturnal. For this reason, a cloud forest night walk is the best way to experience the spectacular wildlife of the Monteverde reserve. Head out with a professional guide who will point out all sorts of wildlife you may otherwise miss to experience wildlife that you have never seen before and would definitely not see during the day.
